UHigh Loses Close One at Glenwood

Oct 13th, 2017 (10:00 pm)

University High School played Glenwood High School for the conference championship on Thursday night at Glenwood and lost in a tight 3-2 contest. 7 minutes into the match, JD Kelley found Nate Clay for the games opening goal on a freekick cross. Clay nodded it past the Glenwood keeper. Within minutes, Glenwood responded, hitting a freekick past UHigh goalkeeper Christian Lopez and tying the score. With just minutes left in the first half, Glenwood again found an open look and buried a shot in the lower left hand corner to give their team the lead at halftime. UHigh came out in the second half with a much higher determination when Mason Wittman found a loose ball 25 yards outside the Glenwood box. Wittman fired a shot into the lower right hand corner, making the score 2-2. With just 12 minutes left, Glenwood was able to find an unmarked man on the back post for the go ahead goal. The Pioneers had 2 more great chances but could not capitalize, making the final score 3-2 in favor of Glenwood. UHigh Gets Revenge on Springfield

Sept 23rd, 2017 (5:00 pm)

Last year, Springfield High School came to UHigh and handed the Pioneers the worst loss they have had in 3 years (4-1). Springfield has been 22-0 in conference play in the last three years but UHigh wanted revenge for last year's lopsided loss. Mason Wittman started the scoring after Nate Clay found some space along the end line. Clay touched a pass to Wittman who buried it at close range. Soon after the Wittman goal, Clay gathered a headed pass from Cayden Redd, beat a Springfield defender, and scored, making the halftime score 2-0. In the second half, UHigh was not done. Goals 3 and 4 came within 40 seconds of each other. The 3rd goal, was Mason Wittman again, banging in a rebound that was given up by the Springfield goalie. The 4th goal was on UHigh's next attack. After several passes to work the ball up the field, Clay touched a quick pass to Camden Brown who fired a shot in the lower left hand corner. Clay was not done setting up his team. With 20 minutes left, Clay again found space on the left side and passed the ball across the box to JD Kelley who hit a shot into the left upper 90. Springfield scored their lone goal on a Penalty Kick ending the game at 5-1. UHigh plays at Jacksonville High School on Tuesday night.

UHigh Wins at Washington

Sept 16th, 2017 (9:00 pm)

After a tough loss on the road against Rochester (0-2), and a lopsided win against Decatur Eisenhower (10-0), UHigh had a huge win against Washington on the road. Washington took the early lead halfway through the 1st half from a volley that beat UHigh goaltender Christian Lopez. The 2nd half was much different. After a missed PK rattled off the post for UHigh, the Pioneers pressed the action again and Camden Brown headed home a scramble in the box to tie the game 1-1. Matt Mier had the assist. Immediately after, a miscommunication by Washington defenders led to a Cayden Redd goal, pushing UHigh into a 2-1 lead. With just minutes remaining, another scramble in the box found Camden Brown's foot and he buried it for the 3-1 UHigh win. UHigh is in action again on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at home against Champaign Central, Decatur MacArthur, Dunlap, and Springfield High Schools.

With 50 seconds left, Normal West pressed UHigh into their own end and received a corner kick. On the corner kick, a scramble in the box led to a West goal, making the score 2-1. UHigh Beats NCHS in Wild Finish

Aug 30th, 2017 (9:00 pm)

The first half was the Christian Lopez show. UHigh came out a little slow and UHigh keeper Lopez was forced to make several big saves, including a PK. Keeping the Pioneers in the game, the halftime score was 0-0. No one could have guessed what would happen in the 2nd half. Mason Wittman got the Pioneers on the board with a header from a JD Kelley corner kick. Only minutes later, NCHS scored 3 consecutive goals within 3 minutes of each other to take the lead 3-1. When it looked like UHigh was wilting, Nate Clay came alive. Clay received a through ball from JD Kelley, beat a defender, and fired a shot into the upper left corner that hit the post and dropped in. The goal gave the Pioneers instant life, making it 3-2. 2 minutes later, Clay received the ball from Jett Jenkins on the 18 yard line, made a quick turn, and fired it off the inside of the left post, knotting the score at 3-3. After a couple chances on each end, Clay forced a foul from 35 yards out. JD Kelley chipped the ball into the box and Clay dummied the ball, which slipped past the NCHS keeper with only 2 minutes remaining. UHigh held on to the lead to complete the comeback and win 4-3.

JV: UHigh 1, NCHS 0. Goal by Joe Brown.

Aug 28th, 2017 (9:00 pm)

After several chances for both teams in the first half, UHigh took control of the game in the 2nd half. Cayden Redd won a header in the middle of the field that found Nate Clay's foot. Clay played it wide to Mason Wittman who immediately played it back to him in the middle. Clay snapped a quick shot around the Bloomington keeper, making it 1-0. The lightning struck not long after and the game was cut short because of inclement weather. UHigh plays the 2nd round of the intercity tournament on Wednesday against Normal Community High School at home (4:30pm). JV will play immediately after.

STATE CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!

Oct 29th, 2016 (10:00 pm)

The University High School Men's Soccer team are your 1A IHSA State Champions!!! It took some work and a lot of concentrated defense, but the Pioneers were able to overcome St. Joseph's High School from Westchester, 3-1. After a scoreless first 30 minutes, the Pioneers found themselves controlling the game and pressing St. Joe's into their own end. Nate Clay then found the ball in the middle of the field and tried to slot a pass through St. Joe's defense. The ball took a deflection and landed right on JD Kelley's foot. Kelley blasted the ball into the back of the net and the U Crew fans went nuts. Within minutes of Kelley's goal, Matt Mier played a ball across goal into the path of Nate Clay. Clay stretched for the ball and poked it onto the bottom of the crossbar and down into the goal, making it 2-0. With only a minute remaining in the half, Nate Clay again found himself in an excellent position. JD Kelley chipped a ball into the box and Clay outraced a St. Joe's defender and their goalie to touch the ball past the keeper. The score at halftime was 3-0.

In the second half, UHigh worked hard on defense to keep St. Joe's at bay. The defensive back four of Matt Mosele, Matt Mier, Ryan Poland, and Jason Lenz (seen above) had several blocked shots and big tackles. Christian Lopez made the biggest save of the game when a St. Joe's player had a close in shot that was destined for the top of the goal. Lopez stretched for a big save. With 10 minutes left, St. Joe's scored a goal but it was not enough as UHigh was victorious and won their FIRST EVER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!

SEMIFINAL WIN!
NEXT MATCH: STATE FINAL!

Oct 28th, 2016 (10:00 pm)

In a heated affair, the Pioneers faced off against the Waterloo Gibault Catholic Hawks for the IHSA State Semifinal match on Friday night. The game was back and forth in the beginning with both defenses unwilling to bend to each teams potent offenses. Several chances were missed by UHigh including a Gibault clearance off the goal line in the opening seconds of the match. UHigh outshot the Hawks 6-1 in the first half but could not open the door. In the second half, UHigh pushed the tempo earlier and had another shot cleared off the line by a Gibault defender. In the ensuing scramble for the ball, a Gibault player cleared the ball off his teammates hand 3 yards outside the box. Mason Wittman quickly grabbed the ball and placed it on the ground after the ref blew his whistle. Wittman touched a quick pass through to Cayden Redd who buried a shot into the upper corner for UHigh to take the lead.

After holding the lead until the 10 minute mark, a flashpoint happened in the match. UHigh goalkeeper Christian Lopez collided with a Gibault player and had to sub out of the game to check his injuries. Michael Napolitano checked into the game and was quickly tested. A scramble in the box found a Gibault player 1 on 1 with Napolitano. Napolitano tipped the shot onto the crossbar and over the goal, preserving the shutout. The final couple minutes were hectic and physical, with both teams exchanging blows. The Pioneers were able to hang on to the win, 1-0, and their first trip to the state final match on Saturday at 5pm!
